tbonekeith asked: Welcome :-) I actually have a vintage horn from the 1930's that didn't come with a ring to lock the two halves together. It relies solely on the taper of the slide section which it was designed for. Your horn has this taper too.
Ahh that would be so cool to have a vintage horn! :D

tbonekeith asked: I hope you don't mind me saying this but when I see a blog where I can give a little advice I feel compelled to help. Don't rely on the ring so much to keep the two halves of the horn together. Before you tighten the screw (ring), make sure the two halves are firmly attached to each other. Give the bell section a little twist to make sure they are attached first, then snug up the screw (Ring).
I was basically always told “make sure it’s screwed on tight blah-blah-blah” (even in the low brass techniques class in college…) so I never really thought about that! I’ll definitely keep that in mind now though! :D Thanks!!

That awkward moment when you’re on the field to start halftime and the screw that attaches the slide to the bell comes undone… trombone bell almost falls off, you try to fix it but the school’s f-attachment horns don’t like to stay screwed together… so you march the first half of the show holding the bell section like an idiot because you can’t just not play… yeah. That was last night. “I’m trombone section leader and I know how to hold my horn, derp.”

I had an amazing teaching moment the other day…
One of the boys in my section in the marching band (not a music major) asked me if I would be willing to help him out because he wants to keep playing music outside of marching band and after college but he wanted some help practicing because he didn’t want to be practicing wrong. I told him I’d help him out, so we met up one day after marching band and the first thing I noticed was his embouchure wasn’t placed right (the rim of his mouthpiece was on his bottom lip so it wasn’t centered at all) and I told him this and that it would take some time to get used to playing with it correct. I emailed him a bunch of exercises (long tones, lip slurs, and stuff like that) to work on.
We get back after our Fall Break and he was really excited because he said his tone has never sounded so good and that he practiced every day of break to work on fixing his embouchure. It made me really happy to hear him so excited about it!

“Bone, hat, bone, hat, bone, hat, bone my hat.”
Band Day with Bronco marching band at WMU was FAB.
I’m so glad I left the percussion world. All they do is stand around watching the BMB drumline play thinking they are better then everyone else there. BONEland was fanstastic and Megan Ready was my…

Oh. My. God. This show was fantastic! Our sets weren’t perfect… but HELL, I had a BLAST marching this! :D
My halftime a couple weeks ago. “Beatlemania” was one of my favorite shows that I’ve ever marched. Ever. So much fun!
